House from Starbucks stirring sticks

Posted in: Krafty kids

A house constructed from interlocked stirring sticks from Starbucks

They say necessity is the mother of invention. Well, it’s true. The necessity to keep my kids quiet is one of my strongest creative motivators! Especially when I’m trying to enjoy my Starbucks coffee. And from experience, I can get about halfway through my Latte before my son starts tearing up the shop.

My solution – grab a handful of the wooden stirring sticks and use them as substitute Lego. It works really well, above is my interpretation of a house, and below is a ‘star’ made by my son.

Still life using felt-pens and spit

Posted in: Dippy doodles

A still-life sketch of a plant using felt-tip pens and spit

It’s official, spitting is an art (when it’s aimed at paper that is, not the pavement). Actually, it’s a great way to blend colours, especially when using water soluble pens. Which I tend to do more than I should – the result of having kids and a ready supply of felt-tip pens.

I did this sketch while my son was learning his times-tables, which meant I had to draw quickly! I found the result a little scratchy so used my finger, and a small amount of spit, to soften the picture. You might be thinking why not just use water – you know, from a tap. Well, that would require extra effort, and isn’t half as fun!
